The History of The Peninsula Church of Christ
The origin of the Peninsula congregation was October
13, 2002 in the home of Al and Pat Mitchell of
Hampton. The genesis of this church was the result of
a soul-searching choice by faithful saints. While other
faithful congregations existed in the Hampton Roads
area, this small group of Christians sort to plan their
families and future in the new venture. Time, distance
and a strong fellowship bond among members were
also a consideration in the decision to start a new work.
By November 2002 the congregation employed the
services of brother Glenn I. Hitchcock to serve as
minister and sister Susan Hawkins as church secretary.
Attendance continued to increase and organizing the
outreach and missionary efforts became paramount.
Missionary support was directed to Malawi, India and
Russia. In reach plans included "The Fishers of Men
Training Course" and community service efforts in
Hampton and Gloucester Virginia.
In December of 2002 the youth distinguished the cause
of Christ by their community service to assist dialysis
patients at Riverside/Gloucester Dialysis. Much of this
history and work is still being writing.
Brother Tommy Stacks of Pantego, North Carolina
conducted the first gospel meeting in May of 2003.
The graduation of the first class of the "Fishers of
Men" course occurred in June 2003. Also during the
month of June, Sister Mary C. Smith, of North
Carolina, conducted the first ladies symposium.
